Modern houses may look similar to their predecessors, but underneath those facades lie several radical and innovative solutions. One of the biggest advancements in home construction in the last couple of decades is the introduction of new materials, which are not only lighter and more durable than the traditional ones, but also cheaper and easier to maintain. One particular technology that utilizes new materials is aerogel insulation. This kind of insulation is made by injecting a special kind of gel into the walls while still in a liquid state. Afterwards, the liquid is sucked out, removing the moisture and leaving a dry mass filled with pockets of air that stop hot and cold air from passing through. Aerogel is almost weightless and was proven in tests to have two to four times more insulating power than traditional fiberglass or foam insulation.

Another amazing technology making its way into the mainstream is 3D printing. There are now several companies which are developing 3D printers that could be used to print entire portions of a house. A Dutch architecture company hopes to develop a new method which will utilize the same plastic material developed for regular 3D printing to produce large LEGO-like components that will be assembled into individual rooms of the house. This method will not only reduce costs, but also make the house more stable, since all components will have the ability to lock together and thus provide more support and stability to the entire structure.

Similar technologies are also being introduced, such as modular house construction. This method is especially popular in cases where there is a lack of space for a conventional construction site. Instead, entire rooms are built off-site, shipped and then placed in their position by a crane. And just like their 3D printed counterparts, modular pieces also add up to the structure stability due to their locking mechanisms. Also, they are valued by ecologists since their usage decreases the size needed for the construction site, meaning that less land will be disturbed during the process.

Now if you think that’s cool, you will love photovoltaic glazing, which will allow you to generate your own energy by using solar power. This works even on the surfaces of your house that are not facing the Sun, since it gathers more sunlight than regular solar panels. Furthermore, unlike the conventional solar power technologies, PV glazing is used not only to cover the roof, but also as a structural building material for windows, facades and walls. Although still in development and not as affordable as solar panels, PV glazing will definitely gain more and more popularity as it gets perfected with time.

The emergence of new materials and methods in the last few decades had launched a race to come up with new technologies which reduce not only construction prices, but living costs as well. And with so many players joining the race, it is safe to say that the house construction sector, as well as potential buyers, face a bright future full of opportunities.
